TRAVEL

Trips made outside of Europe as research have included; Egypt, Morocco, India, Nepal, Zimbabwe, Botswana, Malawi, Russia, Mexico, Guatemala, Belize, Finland, Macedonia, U.S.A. and Japan (where I held exhibitions).

Travel has become a rich source of imagery, not only for its wealth of inspiring landscapes and people, but also for the feeling of transience unique to travelling.

A particular environment can become saturated with associations; these associations remain with me and become fused with other observations. An idea comes to be nurtured by a place / space. I have found contemplation accommodated within a pictorial space.

I employ something that is outwardly real (an insect, flower, pathway, or an object possibly gathered while travelling) in order to explore something far more inward looking and intangible (memories, desires, energy, and pain). The materials and the making are very physical, often sensual. Subtle layers of colour and delicate textures are teased from the plate or drawing. Most recently I have been exploring the sensation of walking: a series of drawings (filmed) titled 'Walk in Progress'.
